Pomona Valley Camellia Society

Camellias grace the winter shade garden with their incomparable beauty. Although camellias are exotic natives of the Orient, they have adapted to our Southern California area, and their performance here is unexcelled.

The Pomona Valley Camellia Society, one of six localized societies that are members of and function under the auspices of the Southern California Camellia Council, was established in 1946 to further the cultivation and appreciation of camellias. Through seminars, meetings and shows, we define proper camellia culture, study propagation methods, display the great beauty and diversity of their blooms, and promote the use of camellias in the landscape.

Monthly meetings are held November-April on the second Thursday of the month at the La Verne Community Center, 3680 ‘D’ Street, La Verne, CA.  Meeting agendas include programs by guest speakers, lectures, demonstrations, hands-on learning workshops, question and answer sessions on camellia culture, a study of companion plants to complement camellias in the landscape, refreshments, and raffles of exceptional camellia plants.

Annual camellia shows are presented for the education and enjoyment of the public. The Pomona Valley Society will host its 62nd annual show in February, 2009.  These displays include many camellia species and the very newest introductions. The public is invited and encouraged to enter their blooms in these shows, especially in the classes that are exclusively for the beginning or junior exhibitor. Winners receive beautiful crystal awards. There are no exhibitor or admission fees for the shows. Scheduled seminars feature camellia culture and the use of camellias in arrangements and in the landscape.

Each societal event is designed to further the culture and knowledge of camellias, while we enjoy the camaraderie of other camellia hobbyists. The information and assistance that is readily shared by experienced growers is truly invaluable.

The public is invited to attend our meetings, shows, and events and to evaluate our program. If you are sufficiently intrigued, we welcome you to join us in this fascinating hobby.  Annual dues are only $25.00 per address.
