Camellias originated in Asia centuries ago. The first plants were brought to America in 1797 where they were grown in New England greenhouses before their culture spread south and west. The most commonly planted species in this country are C. sasanqua, C. japonica, and C. reticulata, but hybrids have produced some remarkable results. Different regions in the United States—including the Pacific, Atlantic, and Gulf coasts—offer distinct and beautiful specimens.

We invite you to explore the American Camellia Trail. This American Camellia Society project is a partnership of public gardens with notable collections located across the country. It is anticipated that private gardens and nurseries will be added in future phases. Visit the individual member websites for information on hours, admission, location, and special programs. American Camellia Trail Gardens are divided up by Coast. Pick the Coast of interest and click on "more". Maps, Websites and Information are provided for each of these beautiful gardens.

Members of the American Camellia Society are entitled to special arrangements at reciprocating botanical gardens across the country.   At many of the Reciprocating Botanical Gardens the admission is free!!!!   Participating Gardens and benefits may be found at  Reciprocating Botanical Gardens.
